Later, when I was a G3 system programmer, I don't think I touched code at a lower level than GIN (and usually with a layer or two of macros below anything I got my fingers on), COBOL and Algol68R. I only found out about the hardware registers in the bigger machines fairly recently, but even then I'd guess that there were many less hardware register sets than running programs and that program switching would involve copying the accumulators + pc set between the hardware registers and the program image. BTW do you know how much of lower program memory was supported by hardware? Yes; in general, the number of hardware register sets in a computer is *one*, unless it provided a second set for the supervisor or for interrupt routines, as a few machines did. Today's microprocessors may have multiple register sets, if they have simultaneous multi-threading, to allow them to make progress on two threads at the same time without context-switching between them (they don't necessarily have to be superscalar as well in order to do this, they could still only do one instruction in any given cycle, but it helps). So a Core i7, for example, will have two register sets in each of its four cores so as to endow them with Hyper-Threading. Context switching whenever a process goes dormant to wait for I/O, or sixty times a second for the compute-bound tasks, is a small overhead. John Savard

Registers *are* memory. Fast local memory. Before LSI it would likely as not been static RAM. Even a D type register is 'memory'. The evolution of single chip processors, initially with onboard RAM for registers, later with onboard ROM for microcode, and latterly with onboard cache to shadow offboard DRAM is a story that can be read many ways. -- All political activity makes complete sense once the proposition that all government is basically a self-legalising protection racket, is fully understood.

I thought you were saying that, when a program image became the active process accumulators were copied to hardware registers and saved back to the image when control was switched to another program image but you weren't certain whether the PC and CC registers were transferred with them. All I'm adding is that, if only some of theset (accumulators, PC and CC) were transferred, then it would be better to move PC and CC rather than the accumulators. Most instructions are not jumps, so it is incrementation that should be optimised. The PDP11 instruction set required pre-decrement of the PC to work; but I imagine that -(PC) occurred so rarely that it could be handled by calling an interrupt in the OS code. But 014747 was an interesting instruction. FYI : I too started with Algol 60, using just an ASR33. Transfers to/from the computer were, IIRC, by bikenet. Sigma task switch was done via an "eXchange Program Status Doubleword",
which held the new program counter value, condition codes, and (for
expanded machines) an indicator for which bank of registers to activate
(apparently one could add multiple 16-register banks to the processor).
No standard stack register -- though one could dedicate a register to
do stack operations, the common (FORTRAN/non-recursive) paradigm turned
into indirect references via subroutine link register (also not a dedicated
register, one specified the link register in the call instruction).
Arguments were passed by...
call,<lr> <subroutine>
data <address of first argument>
data <address of second argument>
...
subroutines would then copy the addresses by indexing off the <lr>, ending
by incrementing the <lr> by the number of arguments.
Sigmas were (in)famous for having something like 224 interrupt vectors
(when IBM 360/370 only had 7 and had to poll to determine which device
interrupted). Each interrupt vector basically held a program status
doubleword, so an exchange PSD made for fast response.
The "big" assembler for them didn't even have a hard-coded instruction
set... Programs started with a "system ..." declaration which basically

I wrote a "system" file that would generate absolute 8080 code. (I forget
the instruction format declaration but something like:
MOV S:SIN,2,3,3 x'01',AF(1),AF(2)
"Form an instruction with three fields sized 2-bit, 3-bit, 3-bit using
constant x01 for first, argument field 1 for second, argument field 2 for
third" (also had LF and CF for label and command field -- presuming one had
defined constants for the 8080 registers the above made
MOV H,B
a valid instruction to the assembler))

The 1900 was equally crufty. It also had no stack pointers and no
dedicated subroutine call register either: A subroutine call at its most
basic looked something like this:

which passed the pointer in accumulator 4 and left the return address in
accumulator 3. Or, if arguments were under 24 bits you'd just put them in
accumulators, Trivial example:
LDA 6 VAL1
LDA 7 VAL2
JSR 0 ADDER
...
...
ADDDER ADD 7 6 [ Add accum 6 to accum 7
RTS 0 [ Return
The 1900 was quite efficient at running COBOL (claimed 6 machine
instructions per COBOL Procedure Division statement) but was less good at
handling stack based languages like Algol60 or 68. I don't recall seeing
even a mention of a Pascal compiler and the first C compiler was barely a
gleam in Kernighan & Richie's eyes.

The nearest to that I've got was the General Purpose MacroGenerator,
which came out of Cambridge Uni and could, among many other things, be
used as a fairly basic assembler.
And, of course, Lex & YACC which are wonderful once you get your head
round them though you can only get C out of it.
However, CoCo/R is an even better: its a bit easier to use because both
lexer and parser are parts of one program, so there's only one input
syntax definition file to write, it is available written in several
languages (C,C++,Java,Pascal, Python,...) generates code for the language
it is written in, and if you don't like the template file for its output
its trivial to write another.
If you have a need for this type of program, I'd say Coco/R is the one to
go for.

The system standard calling convention (multi-language compatible) looked like this, e.g.: CALL 3 SUBR LDN 6 ADDRA LDX 6 VALUB for a by-address parameter, LDN loaded its address for a by-value parameter, LDX loaded its value It is not a mistake that they follow the CALL! Inside SUBR, you get the address/value of parameter #n by executing: OBEY #n-1(3) this executed the n-th instruction following the CALL, and SUBR found the value it wanted in register 6. This also worked well for Algol 60 call-by-name, as you would do the OBEY every time the name parameter is accessed. IIRC the last time I wrote PLAN was in 1976 on a 2903. The PLAN compiler was borrowed from ICL's NYC service bureau and patched to stop it halting 'WE' when run on a 2903. GPM was very, very basic. To do it properly you need something a bit more powerful (not, NOT m4!).
