Picked up Basic, pascal and forth by dithering around. Read a book on APL, but never got the hang of it. I did write some short code, though. Got thrown into PL/1 abruptly, but with several good mentors and the IBM text books I was productive in around two weeks, and had a reasonably good mastery of it after two months. Ditto with C. Got to understanding duff's device after about a year. SQL is something I still learn bits of after 30+ years. Did a 4way inner join a few weeks ago, and got some new details about the evaluation that I wasn't aware of. I'll try to wrap my head around smalltalk again now that I have access to one. -- mrr

College core was FORTRAN, COBOL, and assembly. Pascal was an elective
taught maybe once a year. APL was independent study (I just wanted to fill
out a few credits, and just wanted a C grade) -- biggest program was
turning the Tektronix storage-display terminal into an expensive
Etch-a-Sketch. Re-took BASIC in my senior year as I needed 2 final credits.
This was a year after I'd used it in the data-structures class implementing
a hashed-head multiple-linked list assignment (got fun -- the BASIC only
allowed for FOUR open files); used CHAIN LOAD to transfer from main program
to each of the major sub-functions. Macro-11 picked up as part of the OS
course, since they wouldn't risk us on the mainframe.
Relearned (ALCOR) Pascal on a TRS-80, along with learning K&R C
(Pro-MC) on it... and dabbled with a cassette based LISP. 20 years with
FORTRAN-77 at work; some C, some Pascal (How management let themselves be
persuaded to transition the Macro-11 real-time group to VAXs and Pascal
I'll never understand -- since we had something like 80 skilled FORTRAN
programmers and only one Pascal programmer [the guy in real-time pushing
for Pascal: "They teach it in college these days" -- right; college student
with Turbo-Pascal experience will be able to do a real-time satellite
control application])
I'm not as good at Ada as I'd like... Even though my programming
languages class (a survey level class) had me giving a talk on Ada (based
on the preliminary reference/rationale and a skinny blue book -- no
compiler was available yet). My first employer included me in a batch to be
trained in the language (still no hands-on; MIL-STD 1815 had only been
released a month before, and NYU Ada/Ed translator was just becoming
functional). Didn't get to use it for 20 years.

I was watching a test match that was unavailable here ecceot on Sky, which I don't have, being streamed by an Indian network about 20% of the words were English, and then some Hindi, and then some other language. Its like township speech in S Africa. Some original native languages but a flip into Afrikaans for interoperability, and English for the modern concepts, like 'camshaft' Oddly there isn't a Zulu or an Afrikaans word for 'camshaft' -- Microsoft : the best reason to go to Linux that ever existed.

They are the quickest to integrate when immigrating here. There are statistics on around 40 different nationalities and cultures; where there is a base big enough to be significant. Poles, Germans and Dutch are the only three immigrant groups to outperform the natives when it comes to tax revenues over the lifetime and the number of years in productive employment. The Dutch are number 1. For some reason we take around 10 thousand dutch "refugees" from the denseness and organisedness. They tend to arrive in some remote place and start some useful business. They are, besides some fewer Germans, alone in doing this. Everyone else tends to go to cities and built-up areas. And they are the quickest to learn the language. Bar none. -- mrr

English has the world record for the largest vocabulary, more than 300.000 proper words, and several million combined/idiom constructions. Norwegian is pretty rich too, with around 60.000; pretty directly comparable with the English count. German has about the same, but they tend to make multiwordcontructions that make tallying them quite difficult. So they in reality have a lot more, they may get close to 200.000. I know I have introduced one word, "automagisk", which I used in March 1979; and this is the first documented use. This is not the case for the vast number of languages. Advanced technical documents are not really worth translating to languages where they have problems translating the Bible; having to expand the language a bit to get the ideas across. So, "camshaft" it is. Unlike English, they may have case-endings for their nouns, and they almost certainly will conjugate their verbs fully. And, unlike English, they spell their words in a way that relates excellently (or, in the case of French, at least fairly well) to their sound. Thus, Swedish does what it does with its borrowings because otherwise chaos would result, and the Swedes, quite sensibly, have been warned away from that by the cautionary example of the... cesspool? pit of insanity?... that is English. The way the English took "djinn" from Hindi and kept the plural "djinni" (or was it the other way around?) would never have happened into Swedish. My favourite is 'm"ajl' (the "a is a with umlaut, the whole word is pronounced like mail, except it is under Swedish grammar and spelling). Norway and Denmark, having almost the same language, used E-Post. Which is a similar contstruction to e-mail using the word for mail. And this just goes on.
