When it comes to diagnosing a customer's problem, I've learned that reproducing it is at least half the battle. That's why we love the various utilities now available that let us hook our screen and keyboard to the customer's machine (originally via modem, but now via the Internet). Then we can examine the customer's files and run tests on their own machine from the comfort of our office - and upload fixes if necessary. In cases where that's not possible (for physical or political reasons), there's still the old standby of running a canned job that takes copies of the customer's configuration files and having them to send it to us by whatever means available. As for version control, the first thing I try to do is update the failing program(s) to the latest version so we're on a level playing field.
