A single-minded softy can produce systems that make normal (uninspired) programmers have to work in teams of 5. The outstanding example, of course, is Dave Cutler, with the previously uinforeseen techniques that he conceived of in RSX11 and later in Windows NT.

I was forgetting the railway braking system that I supported 2 1/2 years ago before terminating the contract myself because the software house through whom I was working took on defence work and I do not wish to be involved in any way with killing my fellow man.

But Linux have taken a precedence. Since version 0.98c. Still have the computer it was installed on. Runs 1.0.9 now. I had a similar FreeBSD machine runnint 2.0.5, but the disk gave out. Without Windows, of course, there would have been no OS/2, or at least no OS/2 Presentation Manager, which could also be seen as an improvement on Windows. And Linux gave a tremendous impetus to the X Window System, which, in its various forms like GNOME or KDE, is what users of both Linux and BSD will normally see. With the Macintosh, but without Windows, though, and even without Linux, no doubt there would still have been an X Window System and there would be people using BSD to do what they now do with Linux. Except that the existence of Linux may *well* have made it much easier to get permission to take BSD public; if there were no free quasi-Unix already available, the initial legal difficulties of BSD might have gone on much longer. Perhaps. At least it appeared that way back then. We were drooling for a *n*x for the 386/486 machines, which were more than capable to run such, but none were available for a reasonable price. Suddenly, with Linux, the floodgates opened. We not only got one, but several. Linux, in N distros, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD and BSDi. Later there were more. QNX and Plan9 also followed. I am not saying free; just a price that was comparable to what we paid for a windows license back then; around 15% of the hardware cost. A commercial 386 license would easily be 3x the hardware in 1990. So, Thank You to Linus. -- mrr

Around that time I found myself running a small Unix shop--System V on a 3B2 and SCO on 3 386 machines. It actually made sense there--there was a home-grown application that was developed on the 3B and ran on dumb terminals, so the 386 boxen with terminals and a modem bank cost less than a number of PCs equal to the number of terminals, but SCO on the 386 was cheaper than another 3B. Still, the owner of the company was hoping to take it commercial right about the time that Windows was hitting, and there were big-name players in that market who already had Windows products shipping.
