Back in my consulting days I was working on-site to redesign a 1401 system to something more modern. I dealt with a dysfunctional systems analysis group operating under control of a user area. They often bemoaned their lost specs. They went on and on about how great they were. So, not even looking for them, I wandered into a room right off the computer room. Saw about 10 large filing cabinets so I took a look. Yep, there they were. The bulk of the stuff was in data dictionary format manually created. Pointless really for designing a new process. Getting back to losing stuff, I've seen very little stuff actually get lost. Just people not looking in the right places. Most places I've worked really don't throw stuff out. When they do, it goes to a warehouse for years before it dies. -- Dan Espen
