The FM was not an entry level camera by any means. However it's unfair to
to compare a 1980 design with a newer one. There was a big change in camera
design around 1985, and the FM predates it. In fact, it's really just a
Nikkormat FT-4, but Nikon decided to retire the Nikkormat brand, and stick
with their F brand, which was more popular.

Mid 1980's brought about plastic exteriors (and in some cases bodies),
autofoucs, programed exposure (both shutter speed and apeture), Motor drives
that someone not in space suit could afford to buy, and so on.

A digital camera made with the "clunky" Nikon FM design, would be just as
"clunky". No autofocus, heavy (and expensive) aluminum frame, heavy and
expensive helical focusing (manual) lenses, shutter only automation, and
a slow auto advance as a high priced extra. 

The first Nikon general consumption autofocus camera (N-2020) was a disaster,
it was an FE-2 with no manual film advance (and a slow motor). Nikon literally
stopped manufacturing lenses and cameras for a few years, re-designed and
re-tooled. They had enough stock in warehouses that most people did not notice.

I know I changed modelsin mid stream, an FE-2 was an FM-2 with an
electronicly timed shutter instead of the FM-2's mechanical one. The
FM-2 shutter was faster than the FM's, otherwise almost the same. 

The FM went to 1/1000 of a second with a flash sync of 1/90th. The FM-2
went to 1/4000th with a flash sync of 1/200th. The FE-2 shutter was
slightly faster, flash sync was a 1/250th and that was folded back into
later FM-2's.

The results the N8008 was much closer to modern cameras. 

Canon also did the same thing with the EOS camera but almost went out of
business over it. When they started they Yen was 300 or so to the dollar, 
when the cameras came out the Yen was around 120. They had to tripple the
prices to make any profit and then no one would of bought them. 

They more than doubled them, and barely survived. What kept them alive was
their contract to manufacture laser printers for HP. Now Canon's computer
products bring in about 10 times what their cameras do.
