nospam is right. Digital cameras are faster for many reasons, the
limitations of mechanical film transport being only one of them.

There are a ton of great film cameras out there, new and used. Why do
you suppose that those who need speed and reliability--the sports
photographers--were so quick to embrace digital? The working
photographers have spoken and the future is (largely) digital. All the
inflated rhetoric in the world won't change that.

Immediacy. Without judging its merits, immediacy is with us. From
camera to Mac to Internet in a minute. Don't try that with film, folks.

There is another kind of speed. That's when the light is just right but
it won't last, and the camera's LCD tells you if you got the shot. Try
running to the camera shop and getting the film developed and then
coming back to grab the shot if it wasn't right. I can take 20 photos
in a minute, each potentially better, certainly different, than the
previous, by reviewing each one on the LCD, checking composition,
angle, field of view, and the like. I'll sort them out in Aperture.
Compare that to traveling back that remote Asian mountain on the same
day next year and hoping for the right conditions after finding that
something didn't go quite right. Happens to the best, you know. Fast
auto-exposure and auto-white-balance bracketing. Instant verification =
instant gratification.
