Yep, X is already running, you must be doing this without X running:

I'm not familiar with Mythbunto so I don't know for sure how you change
runlevels. On most distributsions runlevel 3 means text console login only
and runlevel 4 means graphical login to X.

Depending on your graphical login manager you might have some choice to
temporary stop X and get a text console login. Simply pressing something
like ctrl-alt-f2 will not be enough, even though that might give you a
text console for login X will still be running in the background.

As Kevin said, X --configure is a really good way to get an xorg.conf to
use as a starting point if you don't already have that file. But when you
use the X command X can not already be running, at least not on the same
display number. If you find it hard to get into runlevel 3 or temporary
disable X a possible workaround would be to start X on another display
than :0, a command like the following might be useful:

X -configure :1

The above command could even be run from a terminal window on your :0
display. At least on my Slackware system only root is allowed to run "X
-configure". The created xorg.conf will be placed in the home directory of
root. That file should then be moved to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and edited.
