Well Slackware which I as well as Charlie who I was responding to above
are using use some more bsd-ish startup procedures. From /etc/inittab:

# These are the default runlevels in Slackware:

#   1 = single user mode
#   2 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
#   3 = multiuser mode (default Slackware runlevel)
#   4 = X11 with KDM/GDM/XDM (session managers)
#   5 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
#   6 = reboot

However, as the OP is running some kind of ubuntu the above may not apply
to him. Your "standard" sysvinit scheme seems to be the one used by RedHat
according to
http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/3/html/Reference_Guide/s1-boot-init-shutdown-sysv.html

However, according to
http://www.debianadmin.com/debian-and-ubuntu-linux-run-levels.html
none of these schemes are used by debian/ubuntu.
