More experimenting, and it's starting to look as though this might be an 
issue of display resolution setting. When the OS has been installed, the 
only resolution settings available are 800*600 and 640*480.

Selecting 800*600 results in a recognisable screen from the TV-Output 
connection, but with the vertical sync messed up, so I basically get 
everything in 2 vertical positions, and a lot of flickering.

Selecting 640*480, results in a completely unrecognisable mess.

So I'm thinking perhaps the TV-Out hardware only works properly with 
certain screen resolutions, and that the resolution used during OS 
installation works OK, but for some reason once installed, the choice 
does not include the one that works.

Still haven't found a solution though.
