Another thing about this that is really frustrating.

I tried reinstalling the operating system from the CD, which involved 
going through a lot of graphical screens and all those screens worked, 
when viewed from the TV-Out connection. It's only when the Operating 
system is up and running that the TV-Output suddenly fails.

I've found out a little more information. I believe my system board is a 
Jetway J7F2 1.2Ghz mini-itx board.
A bit of searching suggests that the Graphics board is a
VIA UniChrome™ Pro Integrated Graphics Core
A bit more searching there are drivers called OpenChrome drivers that 
ought to work with this type of video device, and that they are already 
part of Ubuntu, and yet Ubuntu doesn'r seem to see my TV-Out connection.

Now I'm wondering, does all this only apply to my VGA output, and not to 
my TV Output.

I just tried booting from a Ubuntu Desktop Edition CD, and all seemed to 
be fine with the TV Output, until I clicked on Try Ubuntu. Once that 
loaded up I ended up with a TV display that didn't seem to have correct 
vertical sync, but at least it wasn't a blank screen.

Still no closer to solving this problem. Surely there must be a simple 
solution. It works during the operating system install process, so why 
doesn't it work when the OS is up and running.
