All sounds a bit of a headache. I suppose that's the trouble with free 
open source software, different people do different things with it, so 
it ends up being hard to figure out how your particular version works.

Well I managed to get a prompt without the graphical stuff running just 
by typing "init 1" in a terminal window, selecting an appropriate option 
from the menu, and then entering the root password.

I created the xorg.conf.new file, which I have posted. Now presumably I 
need to figure out how to modify it to make my TV-Out connection work.
