Well if you really want to know ...

The way it works on Ubuntu, is that when the system boots it runs upstart
(not the traditional sysVinit boot system) and this reads the file

/etc/init/gdm.conf   (assuming you are GNOME desktop installation)

which fires up gdm, which is the GNOME Display Manager.

In the default configuration file for gdm, which I think is now
buried away at something like /usr/share/gdm instead of the previous
standard /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, the configuration tells GDM to start
Xorg for the local display, and when Xorg is fired up it connects
with GDM and GDM presents the graphical login screen.

Annoyingly the latest GDM version 3, as used on Ubuntu,
has had most of its configuration gutted from the appropriate
file, and it is no longer possible, as far as I discovered,
to run GDM version 3 without starting Xorg on the local display.
