This doesn't help them, compared to stack machines.  They need the deep 
pipeline to be equally fast.  A stack machine is internally something like

TOS \
     ALU -> TOS
NOS /

and TOS+NOS are directly connected to the ALU (as DFFs).  If you have a 
register file, you need such a structure, too, it's called the bypass logic.  
Unlike a stack machine, you need an additional multiplexer to feed in values 
from the register file.  If you don't use a bypass logic, you can't have 
dependend single-cycle operations.
