RMS was quite deliberate about that. The notation of C as "portable
assembler" is from Dennis Richie, so not from someone without any authority
in the C world. RMS added several extensions to C which were necessary to
complete the task: computed gotos, long longs, and such. When we started
Gforth 20 years ago, I looked at GCC, and came to the conclusion that the
portable assembler part was intentional, and not by accident, which is why I
was comfortable to choose it. RMS was also very clear that his perferred
language was Lisp, and that he needed a portable system language for his
project, and that was GCC.

This confidence is certainly no longer there.

In Gforth, we solve this problem by compiling the entire engine into one
function. There, inside this function, we have what we need. It's not C's
stack, but it is good enough.
