In the first place, the correct term is "amateur" and not "hobbyist."
Open source programmers are AMATEURS in the true sense of the word

The word "amateur" means someone who performs some activity purely
for the love and enjoyment of that activity.  The amateur is not
necessarily any less proficient than the professional, but only
does not expect monetary compensation for his labors.

Yes, an amateur programmer is just as good, or even better, than
a highly paid professional.  Therefore, open source software is
often just as good, or even better, than its commercial counterparts.

For one thing, OSS can be better because it does not have to conform
to the artificial constraints imposed on commercial products by marketing
considerations.

Anyone who doubts this has never been involved in commercial software
production.  The average professional programmer is not always highly
skilled.  That's why most companies employ legions of coders just to
produce a simple software package.  In this kind of situation, any
individual incompetence tends to get lost in the collective effort.

OSS cannot be so easily dismissed by branding it as "hobbyware."
Face the facts.  The kid next door can be more adept and imaginative
than the six-figure software manager at MSFT.
