Sort of like I differentiate between screen recording and screencasting.
many good screen recording programs, few decent screencasting ones. OK. I
can accept that.

Heck, you can do much of that with Photos or Picassa... though GIMP and
other tools give you more control.

Fair enough... and I would even go so far as to say GIMP is decent at it.
Not top of the class by any means but on par with something like Photoshop
Elements (they do not overlap in features 1:1 but are roughly comparable
programs).

There is also a shake reduction - which I have read good things about but
rarely use myself (and to be fair I use Photoshop for anything "big" a lot
less than I used to, so I am not familiar with a number of it updates).
