The words in it were compiled and added to the stack and the next screen was read, overwriting the current screen buffer. The worst that adding comments could do would be to extend the program or library over more than the minimal number of screens but would not affect the amount RAM occupied: the only effect of comments would be to make the program load a bit slower because it was spared over more screens. > Until we got compilers! > Forth was a compiled language with its own built-in assembler. > I wonder how many if today's programmers have ever had to work to make > code fit in the memory available... > Slightly surprisingly, that was never a problem for me, despite extensive use of Graham Trott's MACE and PL/9 compilers on a 6809 system running FLEX 9 and with 48KB of user RAM available. You might expect both MACE and PL/9 to have problems with comments because both followed the same structure: they combined the editor, compiler and debugger into a single executable which meant that, when a program was being debugged, the source code, compiler output and symbol tables were all in RAM alongside the MACE or PL/9 executable. MACE was an assembler, but PL/9 (a reimplementation of PL/M for the 6809) was a compiled language that was sort of equivalent to C or Pascal, but with a much smaller standard library. That said, I still managed to implement the whole of "Software Tools In Pascal" (Kernighan & Plauger) in PL/9. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

I can imagine. I take it you never used either the uniFLEX or OS-9 level 2 operating systems then? They both used an OS-controlled memory map so that each logged-on user had their own user memory space plus access to the common area containing the SVC entry points, etc. I used uniFlex for about a year. It ran on SWPTC hardware and seemed to be quite stable and reliable. With 256K installed it gave reasonable performance running the Sculptor 4GL on three or four terminals, its main limitation being the speed of the 5.25" hard drives available at the time. I never got my hands on OS-9 level 2, but did use OS-9/68K for many years. That was OS-9 level 1 (multi-user on a 64K 6809!) ported from the 6809 to 68xxx hardware and with correspondingly bigger memory and hugely improved usability. My first kit ran on a 68008 with 1MB RAM and fairly soon got replaced by a 68020 with 8MB RAM. This was an excellent system - reasonably fast and very stable. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

It is not very much different from the overlay system used in minicomputers before microprocessors. Actually loading an overlay is quite similar to mapping a different ROM page. I used overlays in early PDP's and DG Nova's. The Intel MDS development system separated the linker functions of pasting modules together and giving absolute addresses to program sections. Using separate linker and locater, it was quite simple to build overlaid systems. -- -TV

Overlays, because the content of each overlay was under the control of the programmer, were great when they were defined by somebody who really understood how the program worked at a fairly detailed level, but were bloody awful if a numpty set them up. Paging had the same problems, e.g. 'discard least recently used page' usually works well for code pages, but a program that repeatedly scans a very large data structure for hits will only perform well if a 'sequentially load pages' algorithm is used for data pages. If the algorithm was badly chosen the system 'thrashed', a term for repeatedly reloading a small cycle of code or data pages and which always results in horrible performance. I know that the early s/370 systems would thrash at as little as 110% memory oversubscription, while contemporary ICL 1900 George 3 systems, which only swapped complete programs in or out, ran well at much higher core oversubscription figures. At the time I was a G3 admin and part of my job was to tune system performance. We were no better than IBM: ICL's George 4 used paging rather than swapping and had the same problems with paging as IBM's S/370. A bit later I was using ICL 2900 systems, which paged rather than swapping complete programs, and allowed you to assign different paging algorithms to parts of a large/complex application. Getting this right was critical to achieving good performance from online systems. Today, current OSes paging strategies are much less tunable and it shows: with memory now being so cheap and paging algorithms so simplistic, with 'discard least recently used page' being pretty much universal, the whole tuning skill set has devolved to 'add memory until the workload doesn't swap any more'. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

A fairly novel ability was to have customizable instruction set add ons. The major use of that feature seemed to be to make cloning a technical system a bit more difficult. I used to like the assembly language for the systems, mainly because it was quite similar to the 6502's. Think the days of open Apple II software.

It depends on the type of program you are writing... Some programs can easily be divided into a base part and pages that contain separated blocks of functionality that do not call eachother. For other programs that is not so easy. The disk operating system on the TRS-80 used overlays. Some 4KB of resident code and 2KB per overlay, if I remember well. I coded additional overlays myself although the OS was closed-source. It was so small that it was quite easy to discover how it worked by disassembly. Later I wrote a CP/M command processor using a similar overlay system. No real problems as a command processor with a number of built-in commands quite easily separates into different overlays. But of course a typical object-oriented program would be a big nightmare!

I can't confirm for TRS-DOS 3; but when they released LS-DOS 6 /as/
TRS-DOS -- that I can confirm in general (my copy of "The Source" is in
storage)
The various system files were "partitioned data sets" containing the
core command processors, and a specific command was extracted from the PDS
file and loaded into a small space as invoked. (The purpose of the PDS was
to occupy only one directory slot but contain a dozen or so "subfiles")
The expanded Model 4 (128K of RAM) could be used as three banks (the
first 32K was fixed, but the upper 32K could be bank swapped among the
remaining 96K). However, if one had installed the syscall (?) module, bank
swapping might not work -- as the jump vectors were in the first of the
swappable banks (the module was meant to make it easier to access system
services -- instead of having defines for the system code, which might
vary, one had a jump table with fixed offsets which would then go to the
proper address). The only application I had that could use the banks safely
was M$ Multiplan.
Even had a debugger module that could read/write raw disk sectors --
including writing the special marker used for directory sectors. Was useful
when an update/patch OS floppy had a bad sector. I was able to use the
debugger to copy all sectors but the bad one to a new floppy, then compare
the file with the bad sector... I concluded it had no significant
differences, so copied the missing sector from a previous OS floppy. THEN
sent the update back to Logical Systems for replacement.

As I could obtain 8" drives and disks cheaply, I ran my system exclusively from 3 8" drives with a 5.25" drive added only for compatabily with others. (costing half a month's salary in those days...) I used NEWDOS/80 2.0 because it offered the PDRIVE command and supported the above. I think later I was also able to run LDOS but never switched to it as I added some bankswitching to run CP/M 2.2 on the system. Later I added a 5MB harddisk (with homebrew interface) that was only working in CP/M. I know harddisks could be made working on LDOS and some other special versions. I never had later TRS-80 models, I bought an Atari ST and added a homebrew harddisk interface to that, and when Linux appeared in 1992 I built a PC clone (486)...
