And that is basically exactly what Kernighan and Ritchie did, when they
took MULTICS and turned it into UNIX.

20 years on, embroiled in legal bollox, Linus took it, and started with
a clean sheet, keeping what was good, and getting rid of what was either
someone else's claimed property, or what didn't work.

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will
eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such
time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic
and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally
important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for
the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the
truth is the greatest enemy of the State.

Ok. Tell us how many pipeline stages there are? What events cause bubbles
in the pipeline? How does address translation work? What's the role
of the TLB? Is the first level cache virtually indexed, virtually tagged,
both, or neither? How many cache levels and what's the replacement policy?
Is DMA coherent? How many CAM's are present in the processor logic? What's
a tCAM and how does it work? Does the cache subsystem have a prefetcher? If
so, what's the stride? Does the processor implement a strong memory model? If
not, describe the weak memory model and the methods used by software to
acommodate the weak ordering?

How does software control the power consumption of the processor? Which
blocks can be safely powergated? Does the chip support DVFS? What _is_
DVFS? How are interrupts delivered to the target core?

By the style of your questions, it is clear that you are as nearly

<Splort!> It's worth noting that all of this architectural
complexity is a good few levels up from timing diagrams of signals on
pins that can be probed, and a good few levels down from operating system
services. This is just a tiny slice of the big picture, there are many
others equally complex.

For kids today it is far more useful to learn how things of this
complexity are designed and optimised (hint it's not done by one genius
holding the big picture in his head) and how those techniques can be
extended and improved for the ever more complex systems they will be
designing.

One part of that lesson is using complex computers as
programmable components to achieve robust complex system behaviours.
Arduinos are good for this, Pis are better when the behaviour gets really
complex. Another part of that lesson is simulation driven design, and
automated optimisation.

I'm starting to wonder how well a bunch of Pi 0s or similar could
run some of the modern deep learning algorithms on a bluetooth connected
network. Could make for an interesting approach to robot control. Odds on
I'll get nowhere, some PHD student will go two or three steps better while
I'm still catching up with the state of the art, but it'll be fun looking
around and thinking about it.

If you think that C is the only programming language in use today, you
need to get out more. In fact our management thinks we're stodgy for
using an old-fashioned language like C.

I am not a troll and have never trolled in 22 years of using Usenet.

Perhaps you should consider those who stalk me with abuse but

I did wonder about that, but thought the ME29 was later than 1976, when I
started on 2900.

First one I saw was also ICL - the PERQ.

Did it? I thought the original DFC (all three cabinets of it!) was a
rebadged 1900 disk controller.

I thought I was later tole that its guts was ME29 hardware (soft as hell,
apparently).

I was definitely told, when I started to use one on an ICL contract, that
the 2903 used DFC hardware as the result of a "Christ, were short of
cash! Gimme something we can make and sell quickly" panic by the new boss
(Rob Wilmot?). So they shoved the DFC hardware into a new box, added
microcode, a 5MB single platter drive (or EDS60 if you needed it - we
did) and called the result a 2903.

Later, I remember the DFCs on a 2966 being a single, rather larger,
cabinet. Was the 3 box solution an early version?

Could well have been, although looking at Wikipedia, the PERQ was built
from various technologies, starting with AMD bit slice. It originated at
CMU.

That I can believe!

There were two basic 2900 'generations' (let's not get into the 3900).

The first generation was the P-series (about which I know much more).
That had a central SMAC (memory) with ports for OCP (processor) and SAC
(high level perpheral controller). The SAC had the DFC, the GPC (general
peripheral controller (console, tapes, printer, card reader/punch)), and
the CLC (comms, 7502 based I think). So yes, the DFC was an early
version, although P-series persisted for some years (I stopped working on
ours when it was shipped out in 1986).

The second generation was the S-series, with a much simplified layout.
The controllers were all different, I believe.

The last 2900 I used were the Beeb's 2966s. Initially they were running
CME because there was still some live 1900 code awaiting replacement/
conversion. That needed two OPERs - one for G3 and one for VME/B. The
stuff I did there all involved COBOL + IDMSX databases.

BTW, one of the visiting gurus told us that the microcode was all running
on a 2MHz 6809. I imagine that drove a fairly impressive set of hardware
prosthetics but even so it does explain the quoted PLI execution speeds.

I find that hard to believe, but perhaps it's true. I'll ask the guys who
are restoring a 2966.

I never used VME/B. I did use VME/K for three years, until we dumped it
for a home grown operating system.

Is there any particular time that some of them would be there?

I never saw VME/K, but quite liked VME/B once I'd used it long enough to
be able to guess the names of uncommonly used commands (hurray for naming
consistency!). I also used IBM's OS/400 quite a bit, enough to realise
there were interesting parallels between the two. Both had rather horrid
semi-hierarchic filing systems, very consistent command names and both
had good command search facilities and nice full-screen parameter prompts
once you'd found the command you needed. However, where VME/B had nice,
long readable command names backed up by an equally consistent
abbreviations catalog, OS/400 insisted on 9 character file and command
names, abbreviated by necessity and often looking like line noise. For
instance, while VME/B called the COBOL compiler COBOL, OS/400 called it
CRTCBLPGM (the PL/I compiler was CRTPLIPGM and the RPG one was CRTRPGPGM)
- get the pattern?.

It was a hacked up 'mini VME/B' for the machines without the OCP power to
run B! Unreliable and poorly supported. The final straw was when the
'next' version was flagged to be a major 're-engineering' that removed
management facilities we deemed essential.

We were getting a combined hardware/software MTBF (rolling 13 week
average) of just 20 hours. Moving to the home-grown system gave improved
facilities, 50% more throughput, and the MTBF rose to about 2000 hours!

I do, although there were some like that within ICL too. VME/B was just
big and inefficient, with pretty terrible facilities for our environment.
Originally, we had a single OCP 2960, and it could never have run B
anyway.

I don't know about that, but the Burroughs mainframes had "tagged memory",
each memory word (48 bits) had some extra bits to indicate the type
of data stored in that memory location.

This was cleverly used all over the system. There was no need for
separate instructions for integer or floating point operations, the
same add instruction would just operate on whatever data was handed
to it (including de-referencing of pointers).

Of course, what was most impressive was the sheer size and power
consumption of this thing. A system usually consisted of 2 or 3
CPUs, a memory cabinet (6MB), 2 IO processors, all of them housed in
cabinets as big as 2 19" racks alongside, plus of course a number of
magtape drives and a number of diskdrives containing 2x200 Megabytes of
disk storage in each cabinet the size of a washing machine. The system
where I worked had about 7GB of disk storage.

A CPU cabinet held a large number of parallel powersupplies delivering
a total current of about 5000A (about 30kW) to the processor. Compare
that to a Raspberry Pi (which has more CPU performance). Stories were
told about a worker that had inadvertently shorted the supply rails,
hefty copper bars running alongside the cabinet.

I remember that. The reasons for using a stack architecture mainly were:

- easy to write compilers for high-level languages
- compact instructions (zero-address) save memory

But indeed the performance suffers, especially in simple implementations.
