Overlays, because the content of each overlay was under the control of the programmer, were great when they were defined by somebody who really understood how the program worked at a fairly detailed level, but were bloody awful if a numpty set them up. Paging had the same problems, e.g. 'discard least recently used page' usually works well for code pages, but a program that repeatedly scans a very large data structure for hits will only perform well if a 'sequentially load pages' algorithm is used for data pages. If the algorithm was badly chosen the system 'thrashed', a term for repeatedly reloading a small cycle of code or data pages and which always results in horrible performance. I know that the early s/370 systems would thrash at as little as 110% memory oversubscription, while contemporary ICL 1900 George 3 systems, which only swapped complete programs in or out, ran well at much higher core oversubscription figures. At the time I was a G3 admin and part of my job was to tune system performance. We were no better than IBM: ICL's George 4 used paging rather than swapping and had the same problems with paging as IBM's S/370. A bit later I was using ICL 2900 systems, which paged rather than swapping complete programs, and allowed you to assign different paging algorithms to parts of a large/complex application. Getting this right was critical to achieving good performance from online systems. Today, current OSes paging strategies are much less tunable and it shows: with memory now being so cheap and paging algorithms so simplistic, with 'discard least recently used page' being pretty much universal, the whole tuning skill set has devolved to 'add memory until the workload doesn't swap any more'. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |
