I encountered that at university. The PhDs on main campus wanted
everyone to learn Fortran... but the job offers we saw was for C
programming. They were out of touch.

From my perspective they don't seem all that different, not at all like APL
vs. BASIC.

They knew of C programming language existance, but they refused
permission for it to be taught as the main series of programming
classes. We did get two C classes we could take as electives.

Several of my classmates got turned down for jobs bcause all they had
taken in C were those two classes.

This is the stupidity of the employers. If you program in one language
others in the same family can be picked up easily. If I know FORTRAN,
Pacsal, PL/I, etc. C is simple. Similarly (I suppose) if you know Java
other OO languages should be obvious. The problem with teaching the
language de jour is that it chances frequently, possibly before the
students who used it as the language of instruction have graduated.

At one point FORTRAN was the lingua franca, universally implemented,
reasonably standard, and widely understood. Probably the school picked
FORTRAN at that time, and changing a curriculum is not as simple as
flipping a switch.

The languages of instruction should also be chosen carefully.

PASCAL is a straightjacket of structure, but a very useful one to pick
unstructured coding off the students. It is also pretty small and simple,
so it should be picked up in a couple of weeks. Having 4-5 pascal student
exercises towards the end of the first year seems like a very good idea.

Likewise, C++ is a bad choice for teaching OO, because it has a pretty
unforgiving syntax and too little of that Pascal mindset. I am still
looking for that "pascal for OO" teaching language though. Smalltalk?

Before ca 1990 schools also needed toolchains for the languages at hand.
Fortran compilers were fast and small; and a smallish machine could handle
~50 students in edit-compile-test cycles of small programs using the
fast fortran compilers of the day.

GCC was the c compiler of choice, and it was easily 10x bigger in resource
use per student than those lean fortran compilers. Before the RISC
revolution that may have mattered a lot to small schools.

Yes Smalltalk, everything is an object in a class which provides
methods to implement messages, there are no programs, there is no OS just a
heaving pile of objects interacting and a tool to inspect and make changes,
which is of course itself just some of the objects. It's fun, simple and
you can't get anywhere without wrapping your head round OO which it gently
forces you to do.

At least that's how I found it. Then you just have to get used to
the little detail that no two languages do OO in quite the same way or use
quite the same terminology <grumble>what pillock overloaded static *again*
</grumble>.

Objects should be objected to in a university education because they give no
indication about how computers really work.

No need to make any mention of electronics if you were to discuss the
first ever programmable computer, the Z1 by Konrad Zuse, unfortunately
lost by the warmongering in the 1940s

OO should be taught in university education (at least that aimed at
people likely to become involved in creating software) because it is one of
the major approaches used to design and build software today, a programmer
ignorant of OO today is as useless as a programmer ignorant of memory
constraints in 1960. It shouldn't be the only thing taught, it should take
its place alongside the principles of machine architecture, assembler
language programming, block structured languages, functional programming,
logic programming (prolog et al), neural networks, deep learning and all
the other fields (I've missed out a lot) software developers and computer
scientists are going to need to know about in the *next* half century. The
former to use them, the latter to develop them and invent new fields.

IBM are selling chips with a million artificial neurons and 256
million synapses to interconnect them with, and making boards with several
of these chips on them. What use is understanding assembler and the details
of a few von-Neumann architecture machines going to be to the people who
are making those things do useful work, or even interfacing them to more
conventional computers.

Then there's swarm robotics, the techniques of controlling swarms
of autonomous robots using minimal logic and algorithms derived from bird
flocking, ant exploration and termite building.

One of the biggest fields in computing today is "big data", making
use of data in the petabytes and exabytes is not like processing a few
megabytes but more so. Data reduction and analysis on that scale is
something altogether different.

It's computing Gareth, but not as we knew it. I've kept up pretty
well over the decades but there are huge areas where I know I couldn't pull
my weight without extensive study.

A good university course should equip it's graduates to work well
in any of these areas and the vastly larger number of areas I haven't
mentioned (most of which I probably don't even know of). What we started
with is such a small part of what they need now that it can't reasonably be
much more than a small part of a background course for them.

When I was studying, initial programming classes that taught structured
programming used Pascal; object-oriented programming was taught using
Simula and Smalltalk. I think that worked fairly well overall - in both
cases it was fairly well known that neither language was going to be what
would be used "in the real world" so the focus could be kept on
principles.

These days, if I were to choose a single language ... C# might be a good
one. You can introduce structured programming by supplying some boiler
plate code and telling the students to ignore it for now; later you can
introduce its class-based OO, which is in a style that is similar to
other OO languages (such as Java and the OO bits of C++). C# also has
functions as first-class citizens which allows introducing functional
programming later in the same language and environment.

Sure, but if you've only had FORTRAN IV block structure is going to
take some getting used to.

Not sure about starting from Java, but Smalltalk certainly made all
other OO simple to learn - you can even do OO in C look at the Xt library
for an example.

Yep, which is why it's best to teach a bunch of languages aiming to
hit all of the families and go into some depth on the ones thought to be
important. My course was like that, but old enough to miss out on OO and
functional programming. These days if I were running it those two would be
added and the non-structured languages removed apart from assembler.

Yep, first problem being that you need people who can teach the new

Give the lecturers the new language's manual and access to a decent
compiler - if they're incapable of teaching themselves the language and
developing a course for it in a reasonable time why are they still a
faculty member?

After all, that's what a lot of us have done professionally. Thats how I
learnt PL/I, RPG, TAL and SQL. C was self-taught in my own time with the
K&R book and a compiler. Same goes for PL/9, Forth, BASIC, awk and the
Sculptor 4GL. If I can do that, any university lecturer should be able to
do the same.

Those that can do.
Those that can't, teach.
Those that can't teach, go into politics.

Thats's what I did, too, but learning the language well enough to use it is
not necessarily the same as learning it well enough to teach it. You would
expect the instructors to know more than the students. Then all the
assignments have to change, and it's not as simple as just translating them
to the new language, but they at least have to be rewritten and probably
some new and completely different assignments developed.

True, but I'd expect lecturers to be capable of developing their own new
courses, so that background should give them clues about what to put into
courses and what topics to exclude from an introductory language course
and that could be made into additional/optional courses.

For example, an introductory ANSI C course should include everything in
K&R edition 2 while chapters from 6 onward in the O'reilly Lion Book (aka
UNIX SVR4 Systems Programming) is a suitable topic for self-learning or
short optional courses.

Last but not least and only slightly OTT: the contents of Kernighan &
Pike's "The Practice of Programming" should be the subject of a few
tutorials as well as providing a few exam questions. Newly fledged
programmers working in almost any language will write much better
organised and maintainable programs if they follow its guidelines.

Ditto. My only formal training is in FORTRAN and Cobol from my college.
Picked up Basic, pascal and forth by dithering around. Read a book on
APL, but never got the hang of it. I did write some short code, though.

Got thrown into PL/1 abruptly, but with several good mentors and the
IBM text books I was productive in around two weeks, and had a reasonably
good mastery of it after two months.

Ditto with C. Got to understanding duff's device after about a year.

SQL is something I still learn bits of after 30+ years. Did a 4way
inner join a few weeks ago, and got some new details about the
evaluation that I wasn't aware of.

I'll try to wrap my head around smalltalk again now that I have
access to one.

BASIC in high school -- which made my first exposure to a FORTRAN
program perplexing... There were only a few "statement numbers" and they
weren't even in ascending order <G>

College core was FORTRAN, COBOL, and assembly. Pascal was an elective
taught maybe once a year. APL was independent study (I just wanted to fill
out a few credits, and just wanted a C grade) -- biggest program was
turning the Tektronix storage-display terminal into an expensive
Etch-a-Sketch. Re-took BASIC in my senior year as I needed 2 final credits.
This was a year after I'd used it in the data-structures class implementing
a hashed-head multiple-linked list assignment (got fun -- the BASIC only
allowed for FOUR open files); used CHAIN LOAD to transfer from main program
to each of the major sub-functions. Macro-11 picked up as part of the OS
course, since they wouldn't risk us on the mainframe.

Relearned (ALCOR) Pascal on a TRS-80, along with learning K&R C
(Pro-MC) on it... and dabbled with a cassette based LISP. 20 years with
FORTRAN-77 at work; some C, some Pascal (How management let themselves be
persuaded to transition the Macro-11 real-time group to VAXs and Pascal
I'll never understand -- since we had something like 80 skilled FORTRAN
programmers and only one Pascal programmer [the guy in real-time pushing
for Pascal: "They teach it in college these days" -- right; college student
with Turbo-Pascal experience will be able to do a real-time satellite
control application])

I'm not as good at Ada as I'd like... Even though my programming
languages class (a survey level class) had me giving a talk on Ada (based
on the preliminary reference/rationale and a skinny blue book -- no
compiler was available yet). My first employer included me in a batch to be
trained in the language (still no hands-on; MIL-STD 1815 had only been
released a month before, and NYU Ada/Ed translator was just becoming
functional). Didn't get to use it for 20 years.
