Top university education, but decided not to do a Phd and become an academic..too remote, too ivory tower. Now I miss the academic discipline and debate, but I don't miss the petty mindset and narrow vision of most academics. Academia is about probing and extending the limits of knowledge - at least in technical disciplines. Whereas what the world needs is rapid foolproof deployment of existing technology. And you can pretty much turn that into CompSci for the first, and Software Engineering for the second. The days are gone when we needed tens of Alan Turings to understand te theoretical limits of computing., WE need thousands of people who can churn out reliable debugged solid if boring code to solve humanities bounded and known problems with technology that is mature and reasonably well understood. And a Pi is a pretty decent platform, to get them started.. What it isn't is a hardware or operating system or theoretical development platform to ensure they understand the very fundamentals of computing. -- “it should be clear by now to everyone that activist environmentalism (or environmental activism) is becoming a general ideology about humans, about their freedom, about the relationship between the individual and the state, and about the manipulation of people under the guise of a 'noble' idea. It is not an honest pursuit of 'sustainable development,' a matter of elementary environmental protection, or a search for rational mechanisms designed to achieve a healthy environment. Yet things do occur that make you shake your head and remind yourself that you live neither in Joseph Stalin’s Communist era, nor in the Orwellian utopia of 1984.” Vaclav Klaus

He'd got it at one of the schools in New York, but I don't remember which one. As far as I could tell his course had consisted mainly of learning COBOL - a useful language to know at the time, but I was quite surprised at the lack of theory, assembler and system design elements in his course. Still, it all worked out well - in the build phase of our project he wrote most of the COBOL while I wrote all the assembler. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

Both computers needed a Selectric-based terminal with a special APL golfball installed to be able to enter, edit and display APL code. I may be biased since my first programming language was Algol 60, but I think that early introduction to block structured code and well specified looping and conditional statements vastly helped my ability to think in terms of well-structured programs and of setting out to write code which other programmers would find easy to read and maintain. Yes, I know you can write properly structured code in FORTRAN, COBOL and assembler, but poor programmers can also write unstructured garbage all too easily. Its harder to do the latter in Algol, Pascal or even C, so teaching them first will hopefully instill the habit of writing decently structured, readable code. Similarly, I'd prefer to teach OO programming in Java than C++ or Python simply because you can't avoid using classes and their extensions in Java, while its entirely possible to write class-free C++ or Python. Same goes for Perl. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |
