APL and Basic are very different languages. Basic is a simple,
pretty straightforward, interpretative language that mimics a lot
of FORTRAN.

APL is a much more abstracted language, and one we should look
a bit more closely to for further language development.

I call them "surface languages", where they are pretty tailored to
the application at hand. Yes, APL is pretty tailored to a branch of
mathematics. The level of abstraction has the consequence that
it doesn't matter so much that it is interpreted, because it does
much bigger chunks of processing for every token. (Yes, IMNSHO APL
goes a bit overboard in terseness; but that is me).

I see way to few such languages, and the ones I see are overly
complicated and does not bring much joy.

Like the sendmail.cf language. Or the asterisk extensions.conf one.
The kamailio one is a lot better.

All of these are rulesets, but very powerful ones. But they all lack
in friendly and anti-bug syntax.

One application that could do well with this is the spredsheet. I have
seen some examples, but you need to integrate the language with the
graphics. This is a tall order, I know.

The "ruleset languages" I mentioned above are at best on par with Fortran 77,
at worst worse than Fortran II.

OO is fair and good, but we need other methods too to gain the abstraction
needed to tackle the multi-million LOC projects.

OO also has definate performance impacts when done at the low-ish level
of C++ and Java. Much better to have a proper level of abstraction first, so
the OO works in larger chunks. Like the APL vs Basic interpretative performance.

We need more computer languages. Lots more.

Its rather too terse for my taste and, while its avoidance of grouping
syntax[1] is understandable and not different to, say, Forth, I have no
clue why Ken Ivorsen chose R->L execution rather than L->R unless it was
so that the assignment operator becomes 'just another operator' that
happens to be the last to be executed because its the left-most one.
Personally, I think I'd rather work L->R like this:

   a + b / c = result

than R->L like this:

   result = c / b + a

where both are equivalent to C's "result = (a + b) / c;" but I suppose
thats a result of me learning to read (Roman) text L->R rather than
R->L as is done in Arabic.

[1] round brackets, used to control execution order in other languages

Agreed, as indicated by the (possibly apocryphal) story that Ken Ivorsen
was able to write a screen editor in 25 lines of APL but, when asked to
amend it 6 months later, could no longer understand it's logic well
enough to do so.

Agreed. The changes that anybody except its author can maintain a complex
spreadsheet is roughly zero. Yes, a good spreadsheet interpreter has
facilities, e.g. the ability to name cells, that could make them
readable, but have you ever seen them used outside a spreadsheet lesson?

Oddly enough, the much-maligned COBOL has a few of these features. I'm
thinking such as its SORT or SEARCH verbs and edited data declarations,
e.g.

   05 statement-total pic $,$$$,$$$,$$9.v99CR blank when zero.

which defines a field that is printed as 19 spaces of its value is zero,
would print 5 cents as $0.05, 2048.5 as $2,048.99 and -500 as $500.00CR

I don't know another language that can specify this level of format
control as a single statement except by hiding the code as a library
function or method.

PL/I, the syntax of the PICTUREs is a bit different, but basically the same
idea. This is one of the things I missed most about C, along with the
ability to move a short character string to a longer field and have it
automatically space-filled.

I wondered if PL/I might do that too.

The only PL/I documentation I have is for subset G and the only versions
I've used was subset G on a Stratus fault tolerant box and IBM PL/I on an
AS/400. Neither system produced financial reports or displays: the
Stratus system was a message switch designed to transfer arbitrary
messages between endpoints using any one of X.25, SNA LU2(3270 bisync) or
SNA LU6 or DECnet. Yes it *was* a long time ago: look Ma, no TCP/IP.

Huh? APL has used parentheses to control execution order from the
outset.

On a daily basis I deal with APL that somebody else wrote 20 or more
years ago. Figuring out the APL is not terribly difficult, in part
because of that right-to-left execution--figure out what the right end
does and then go down the line one operator at a time until you have it.
The problem is figuring out _why_ it's doing it and where the change
needs to come to implement whatever adjustment needs to be implemented.

Yep. We have a huge pile of APL workspaces that are currently driven by
an Excel spreadsheet. Named cells and named ranges are used all over
that.

APL's quad-FMT does it just fine on output. COBOL does have the edge
though in read formatting. I believe though that that 2948.99 should be
2048.50 though.

Being interpreted or compiled is just an implementation detail, but not
characteristic for a language per se.
Besides, there have been compiled basics.

Some languages can't be compiled. There exists a "compiler" for Rexx, for
example, but the compilation it does is very limited, I suspect about the
level of tokenization a BASIC interpreter does. You can "compile" each
operator into a call to a subroutine that does the actual work depending on
what arguments are passed to it.

BASIC isn't always interpreted. I have used at least two systems where
the code was compiled (one was a JIT system, back in 1974).

I even used a compiled Basic on an IBM 360 in the 1970s. It was a simple
one but it did support character variables.

IIRC, VAX VMS BASIC in the early 1980s could be compiled or
interpreted.

Of course, I always include resources on where to obtain more

Don't think of it as a total loss. If the kids are smart they keep their
notes and handouts for stuff they expect to use at some point. For years I
dug out stuff, finally got around to throwing most of it out a few years
ago.

In my (and your) days we did not learn how to administer a particular
OS, we learned what an OS did and what kind of management one would
have to do. There were computers that one could practice on, but
the goal was not to learn and memorize all the particular concepts
and commands of that particular OS, but more of the general things.

I guess this was the advantage of not having a predominant OS around:
There was no opportunity to teach the students the tips an tricks
of one single OS and thereby even strengthen its position.

(we all know the responses when trying to use something else than
Windows: "we would have to teach the users how to use/administer it")

Windoze administrative is not college-level material, more like vocational
training. (Unix admin would be too...)

The marketers at big blue would have you call it z/OS but of course
MVS is correct.

IBM has bolted on a UNIX like sub-system which does a passable job
of pretending to be UNIX.

IF you can persuade the Powers That Be to set up your account for it.
It amazes me the stuff that's on our system that nobody has configured.

Yep. I was in a development shop and the setting up was not automatic
(for reasons untold). But anyone could get one.
I found take up by other developers was close to non-existent which
probably had a lot to do with it.

But then we had many systems available and I strongly preferred to
use a Linux machine to USS.

Sounds a bit like the average Linux distro!

The amount of code you COULD run versus the amount you DO run...is
staggering...

Yes, that is the difference with a recent Windows version.
The amount of code that DOES run and that you never need is so huge
that you need a powerful machine just to bring you to a desktop.

In the same amount of distribution size that a Linux system brings
you a wealth of applications you never are going to use, Windows
brings you only a desktop with file explorer and internet browser.
