I was watching a test match that was unavailable here ecceot on Sky, which I don't have, being streamed by an Indian network about 20% of the words were English, and then some Hindi, and then some other language. Its like township speech in S Africa. Some original native languages but a flip into Afrikaans for interoperability, and English for the modern concepts, like 'camshaft' Oddly there isn't a Zulu or an Afrikaans word for 'camshaft' -- Microsoft : the best reason to go to Linux that ever existed.

If you'd like some more obvious examples; If you know Portugese, you will understand most of Spanish. (but not the other way around, I gather). If you know Finnish, you will understand quite a bit of Estonian, and may have some headway in learning Hungarian. This also does not go quite as well in the opposite direction. And my monther language, Norwegian; I understand almost all of Swedish, and most of Danish. This also does not go quite as well in the opposite direction. Although the famous joke is the dane shopkeeper who looks perpelxed at us, and asked if anything was wrong asks "sorry, are you Swedes?" "No, Norwegians". "oh, i thought for a moment I could understand Swedish". Also, knowing Scandinavian, German and English makes written Dutch quite understandable; but the spoken one is quite a bit harder. -- mrr

I have long been of the opinion that the less code I write to achieve the desired results the better - at least partly because that means there's less room for the mistakes I keep making and have to painstakingly find and remove. > FORTH.
