But you don't need either of them in the Duck.

that's a lie. it is not required.

launch terminal, navigate to the applications folder and delete it.

I worry that the next time I do a software update, not having something
like Chess will bunge the whole thing up.

I think I'll give it a try on a Cloned drive, next time, and see...

Mac OS X needs Chess because it's during the Knights that it does the
housekeeping routines. ;-)

if chess gets updated you will end up with pieces of the update because
their update mechanism is (still) broken.

anyway, nobody uses chess and it doesn't get updated so who cares.

This isn't based on ACLs. On my Mavericks system, Chess doesn't have any
ACLs, but I get this error if I try to move it to trash.

Finder is referring to a list of applications and other files installed
as part of OS X, and regards them all as being "required", therefore it
refuses to modify or delete them. I don't know offhand where this list
resides, but it might just be checking in specific installation
receipts.

If I remember right, this was a new feature in Mountain Lion.

I have 6 terabytes of storage, so the space-savings wasn't the issue.

I thought it odd... It was a passing comment, nothing more. You're
making this into something it's not.

Aren't people allowed to wonder about anything anymore, without someone
thinking that their hair is on fire?

Believe me, you'll know when I'm upset. It won't be a big secret :-)

The dock takes up 0 pixels on the screen. Can't get less than that.

I'm one who keeps a minimalist dock, one which has icons for Finder,
Trash, and any currently open applications. I launch using Spotlight,
which has been significantly improved (as I see it) in Yosemite.

As an aside, I've long given up using a mouse, preferring instead a
Magic Trackpad, a device which to me is far easier to use and more
accurate than a mouse.

Yep, agree on both counts (though I will return to Launchbar over
Spotlight once 10.10 is closer to release). The only exceptions for me
on the trackpad are 1) World of Warcraft and 2) multiple item selection,
so I still keep my marble/trakman Logitech thingy.

The original Developer Preview release of Mac OS X in May 1999 looked
like Mac OS 9, complete with the multi-coloured Apple menu, same icons
and window gadgets, and no Dock. There was also an Apple Menu Options
window to allow you to add items , seprateors, sub-menus, etc. to th
Apple menu.

Unfortauntely by the time of the Public Beta release of Mac OS X in
September 2000, the Dock, pinstripes and "lickable" icons had replaced
that original version. (It also move the Apple logo to the centre of
the menu bar, but that was quickly swapped back again.)

I thought the elimination of the Apple menu was probably the most
glaring omission in OSX. (Well, that, and Windowshading.)

And after Microsoft spent MILLIONS, and had gone to all that trouble to
copy the Apple menu's functionality in "the Start button".

Steve Jobs had a read hard-on for that damned Dock. I heard he
patented it just a day before he died...

I always thought he died before his time, but now I'm thinking, maybe
he died one day too late... ;-)

That, naturally, should be "real hard-on", not "read".

What I wouldn't do to KILL autocorrect, once and for all. (or to have
a newsreader that lets me cancel my own posts, like MT-NW did...)

If I remember right, someone said that autocorrect might be a function
of the operating system, and not just in the newsreader.

I've turned it off numerous times in Unison, but I'm gonna have to fish
around in the system prefs a bit...
