Talk about flat!!! This just is not pleasant to my eyes at all! :(

The dock was elegant on Mountain Lion, now it just there and not good
looking at all. The new Safari is in freaking pastel shading just like
the miserable one on the iPad, but with a bigger screen it looks much
worse.

Got a new iTunes with it and you can't get the right side option screen
to show up. Miserable!

I've been debating switching back to Windows for a bit, and this just
may make me do it. I find the Win8.1 screen on my SurfacePro a hell of
a lot more pleasant to use!!

I'm still on Mountain Lion with iTunes 6.x because of Apple's decision, for
whatever the hell reason, to drop Cover Flow. But, to go back to Windoze
would be to me like have my teeth extracted w/o any anesthesia...

A few months ago I would have said the same thing. But then I got a wild hair and bought a Surface Pro (original version) w/128Gb SSD and started using it a bit. I found Win8.1 on the tablet to be wonderful and so easy to use. Much more pleasant than the iPad since iOS 7. Actual contrast!! Who would have though you could have that?? :)

Now I bought 3 128Gb SXDC cards for about $20 a pop and use them as needed. Originally I got the Type Cover but the other day I got a barely used Power Cover. This gives me an evenings use with no problem as the Power Cover adds about 70% more battery time. The size is great for the lap and unlike the 11" MBA I tried out, is perfectly readable.

The downside is that some apps that we are used to having on tablets just don't exist in touch form for Windows 8, that is a problem that MS hasn't addressed well.

The major thing that I would miss with a switch would be iTunes, 'cause iTunes on Windows sucks wind, and I have a fairly large number of videos in iTunes. And iBook, I have a slew of books in iBook format. The most likely scenario for me may turn out to be to not upgrade to Yosemite and keep the MBP, and continue on as I am now.

Yosemite just doesn't float my boat!! :(

The problem is that a tablet is not a computer, nor vice-versa. Windoze
8 is an awful kludge (even more than usual Windoze) designed for
touchscreens which doesn't work properly on a full desktop / laptop
computer.

There are options within iOS 7 to make it *slightly* better. Go to
Settings -> General -> Accessibility and you can tweak things like text
size, boldness, button shapes, contrast, etc.

Correct almost... :)

Most tablets don't make good computers, but a very few do. I have a Surface Pro that I use most of the time for my tablet needs. Even though there are holes in app coverage for touch, it does have the ones I use on a daily basis. And it works as a laptop just fine too since it is a full Windows computer. As a desktop replacement it is dead simple to connect
to an external monitor and keyboard.

Usually when I use it as a laptop/desktop, I'm doing things in desktop apps mostly, though some of the touch apps are also used and work fine with trackpad/keyboard.

A few months ago I would have agreed with you about Windows 8, now I don't at all.

there's not much microsoft can do.

developers aren't particularly interested because the market for it is
so small. they're going to target ios and android first.

There's a lot MS could do. They could hire some developers to make
some apps or pay some outside developers with a good track record on
iOS and Android to develop for the Modern UI. That isn't even a new
idea, it is one that has been used plenty of times in the past by many.

But if they aren't willing to do either of those things, your post is
dead on. The Win8 Modern UI market is slim in comparison to iOS and
Android. The odd part is that I think MS could be the long term winner
in the 'unified' computer/tablet/phone market. They have all the tools
and products needed and a huge user base on the desktop/laptops now.

they've already offered money to developers to write apps for windows
phone, except that only works for the big name titles that microsoft
wants to see on their platform and that they know about.

they can't pay for every developer to write for their platform.

they missed the boat.

it's too little too late. they are destined to be a 3rd place platform.
it's not going to be anywhere close to ios or android.

I'm not ready to agree with you, tablets that are worth having are a
relatively new thing in this techie world.

it's true that the market is very new, but ios and android have
established themselves as the dominant platforms.

for windows to approach, let alone match either of those, is a *really*
long shot. apple and google aren't sitting still either.

They could? The same MS that is having to lay off 18,000 workers?

They'll just replace those workers with cheap H1Bs.

People like you come out of the wood work any time Apple makes
substantial, if glitzy, interface changes. Anyone who has been here a
minute knows that for Apple, anything that isn't great will be refined
over time. Nothing new. Go play with Windows. The rest of us will still
be right here after you calm down and realize it's not all just about
looks.

You don't know what you're missing if you're too close-minded to look
beyond what you have. There is no single OS that satisfies every need.
MacOS is pretty but it's definitely lacking in power. The idea of using
it for commercial servers is long dead and recently it's even becoming
difficult for workstations. It's the Toyota Camry of computers.

Probably not the smartest idea to just assume that someone who doesn't
wet their panties each time Apple makes any big UI changes must
automatically have no experience with other operating systems or
platforms. For many of us "poor" Mac users, nothing could be further
from the truth, but for the simple fact that to be a proficient,
employable laborer in the technology field, one must learn about the
world around them; and anyone can tell you: it ain't a "Mac world" just
yet. I work professionally with Solaris, various flavors of server and
desktop Linux, various embedded systems, and versions of Windows
regularly in my employ; so I know *exactly* what I am "missing" when I
make Mac OS X my main desktop platform of choice. And the idea that
something as silly as the flatness of a UI element will somehow prevent
me from getting shit done is laughable. Little things like that mean
relatively nothing to me in my daily work.

And while you blow all that stinky, hot air out of your silly, little
blow hole, millions of professionals in software development, audio/visual,
scientific, and many, many other sundry technical fields use Macs day
in and day out to get real work done, because it's the better
alternative among other operating systems. "Use the best tool for the
job" is a phrase better understood by some than others, indeed.

I don't by any means see the Mac OS as being faultless. Nonetheless,
for my purposes, the editing of still photos (Lightroom 5 and Adobe
CC2014) and digital video (FCP X), my 27" iMac and my MBO Retina SSD
perform admirably.

As for OS X as server software, it never made sense to me to run server
software on an OS that is so eminently suited for all-day human
interaction, especially when one considers that a much cheaper and less
capable box can function nicely as a server. I don't own a Mac Pro,
don't think I need one, but I have used them briefly on several
occasions and my first impression was that they are incredibly powerful
video workstations. YMMV, of course.

I'm happy with a couple of Mac minis for the stuff I do. I run Linux in
virtual machines for stuff that's a pain to port (where "pain" nowadays
means anything harder than a "yum install <product-name>" on Linux). I
also have Windows in a virtual machine for the increasingly rare occasions
I need that-

Well that was my view too until Microsoft came up with Windows Server 2008.
It can be done but it isn't cheap. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple had
written off a lot of research on the server front with their abandonment
of ZFS.

You do know how to enter your BitLocker password on one of those, don't you?

What form of "power" is it lacking?

Would you care to elucidate?

Thanks for your snide remarks, it seems you are very good at them.

I've been a Mac fan for lots of years, and I will damn well complain
when I see something I don't like about what they are doing.
