And you said:

'With a single click, I can literally navigate to any folder or file in
any of the 9 volumes on my system, and related network. Tell me why I
should give that up?'

Then you behaved like an idiot.

No. Ending a sentence with the phrase, "you know" is a figure of speech.

I didn't say "well know". That's an odd mistake for a proofreader,
don't you think?

You presented the ability of the classic Apple menu to display a
hierarchical menu of everything on a drive as a feature that was very
important to you.

I'm not.

All I did was point out something you didn't understand that you
apparently were using as the lynchpin of your argument that you need
the classic Apple menu.

So THAT'S what you're talking about. I didn't read it that way
because you didn't write it that way.

You wrote: "You can do that pretty well with the Dock as well you know.."

What you MEANT is "You can do that pretty well with the Dock as well,
you know.."

That missing comma completely changes the meaning of your sentence.
"as well you know" means that I know it well. "as well, you know" is a
statement about the dock - and not about MY knowledge of it.

The first way, you're telling me what I know. The second way you're
telling me something about the dock. If that's the case, I withdraw my
objection. Maybe you're weren't trying to be a dick, after all ;-)

>> I don't use the Dock. After playing around with it a decade ago, I
>> decided I didn't need it. I give it another shot in every new OS, but

>
> I didn't say "well know". That's an odd mistake for a proofreader,
> don't you think?

Another common mistake. I didn't say I was A proofreader... I said
that "I PROOFREAD for a living." Proofreading is an activity...
admittedly one that A proofreader does, but it's not an activity
exclusively practiced by proofreaders.

If I'd said that I "fly" for a living, it wouldn't necessarily mean
that I was a pilot. It might just mean that I'm a traveling salesman.

Now, when I put quotes around the words "well know", I wasn't quoting
you... I was accenting the phase, because that's what the sentence (as
you wrote it) was implying. A comma changes the meaning of your
sentence entirely. Yes, punctuation is a bitch...

>> (snip)

The rest of the argument seems to stem from the original
misunderstanding, and I think that this all stems from me thinking
you're saying ONE thing, and YOU thinking you're saying another.

Doing what I do, for a living, causes me to read LITERALLY what is
written. Or does it causes me to LITERALLY read what is written? If I
find out, I'll get back to 'ya.

The word order was a giveaway. "as well you know" vs "as you well know.

No. From you think I'm saying one thing, and me KNOWING I'm saying another.

Do that.

In the mean time, how about admitting that the feature of the classic
menu upon which you CHOSE to turn your argument for it being essential
to your use of a Mac also exists in the Dock?

No. You were still being a defensive dick. Just a passive-agressive one.

If you didn't want to be a dick about it, you would have just said,

He worded it very poorly, giving the impression that he is a full-time
preafrooder. Based on his subsequent clarifications, what he
apparently meant is, "Proofreading is part of what I do for a living,"
or "I PROOFREAD as part of my job."

If he had simply said that he finds it easier to do it with the classic
menu than with the Dock, there would be no argument.

My God! That is what I said! This discussion didn't start out as an
argument over the dock. It started out with me saying that Yosemite
changed the size of the Apple in the upper left corner. And I called
it "a minor annoyance."

My EXACT words were:

> I'm not telling YOU what you should use. And I never said the Apple
> menu was "necessary"... just more elegant and convenient. You're
> reading something into my words that isn't there.
>

> workflow.

In OTHER words, I said exactly what you just said I SHOULD have said.

Had I said that the dock couldn't do it, and then found out that it
COULD - then I would have something to admit.
As I never even suggested that the dock COULDN'T do it, why do I have
to "admit" that it does?

Next, I'll have to "admit" that water is wet :-)

I implied the dock was fugly, and actually SAID that it took up
valuable real estate on my desktop, whereas the Apple menu wasn't, and
didn't.

You've taken offense because I don't like the dock, and you've made a
molehill (what I referred to as "a minor annoyance") into a mountain
(what you referred to as "your argument for it being essential to your
use of a Mac").

This was originally about the Apple logo being, LITERALLY, a few pixels
smaller in Yosemite. And I stated that I could fix that problem in the
SAME post as I brought it up in. I never made an argument. The
argument started when Lewis commented:

>> Or by not trying to pretend that OS X is OS 9. That's an option.

Since when is using an app that's a perfect fit for your personal
workflow "pretending" to do anything?

Then I was told that I was "clinging to old technology" and "living in
the past".

All because I use ONE app that seamlessly integrates into my (MY)
workflow? Like that shouldn't even be an option for any sane
individual. The horror!

Mind you, this is all happening while I'm running a beta release of a
new OS that's still months away.

Hah, that's some clinging to old technology, that is...

Puhhleeeezeee.... doesn't anyone see how galactically STUPID this
whole argument has become?

It started from what I called "a minor annoyance", and has morphed into
something that threatens to rip the very fabric of space and time
itself.

Oh, the humanity!
