Oddly, this fixed the icon displayed in the dock (changed it
from the Applications folder to a disk icon).

> Right-click the Dock icon again. Choose "View content as List".

And this now comes close to the Apple menu. The white font on
a translucent black background is tolerable, but the contents of
aliases are not listed. I have an Applications alias in my root
dir (have no idea what put it there) that didn't work until after
I hovered over the actual Applications folder and let it list,
but my other alias (/Library/Documentation/User Information)
doesn't work, at all.

So, to sum up, so far it's close, but no cigar.

Not "oddly" at all...

...since that what that suggestion was designed to change.

Displaying as a "Stack" gives you the icon of one of the items in the
folder/volume. There are clearly some internal rules about which icon
that vary because if you have your Downloads folder displayed as a
Stack in the Dock, the icon it displays is always the most recently
added item.

OK: how many aliases of folders do you actually USE?

In addition to the one that doesn't work via the dock
(Docs) in the Apple menu I have my home dir and the
Utilities folder directly available. I can also add
anything else I'd like to directly access, without
having to create aliases in the filesystem itself.

Is that a soft link or an actual Mac alias? IME, soft links in the Dock
don't work, while aliases do.

It's an alias, that I'm reasonably certain came with the OS. It does
work, in the sense that if clicked the folder will open. Just hovering
over it does not display what's in the folder, though.

Not oddly at all; that's what it's supposed to do. If you look at an
icon when set to Display as Stack, you'll see that it's actually a
bunch of files and/or folders stacked one behind the other.

With Yosemite, it's black on a white background. (I turned off
translucency, otherwise, it would be on a translucent white
background.)

Starting with either Snow Leopard or Mavericks, there's a submenu that
opens when you point at a folder item.

You can set the Dock to display the content of a folder as a list.

No, the FACT that Launchbar can do everything ClassicMenu can do, and
more, is not a matter of opinion. It has quantifiable more features.

I wasn't talking about the Classic menu when I said that. I can see
where it might have looked that way, though.

I was referring to the line "It replicates a feature of System 7 that
was useful *in system 7* and is far less useful in OS X"

That's the opinion part that I don't agree with.

I would also refer to Dragthing, which can do just about anything I can
think of with remarkable customization options.

except for putting a hierarchical menu in the menubar.

and it's not a question of how many features but how easy it is to use.

if number of features was all that mattered, emacs would win.

apple products generally have *fewer* features than the competition but
the ones they do have are implemented better.

which adds a 2.5 second latency to anything you do with the dock.

so is the dock. so is os x.

it's impossible to use a mac without a mouse (or trackpad), at least
with any resemblance of efficiency.

it's just as useful, if not more so because he *prefers* it.

except for speed (even without your artificial 2.5 second delay), and
because of fitt's law, dock items are a much *smaller* target, not
larger.

but with typing, which is slower.

Nope, not always, and certainly not in every situation.

Typing is nearly always faster than mousing. There are some tasks for
which using the mouse/trackball/trackpad is faster, but not many.
However, in those tasks where it is faster, it is a lot faster.

you might think it's faster, but it's almost always slower by the
clock. there are famous studies that consistently show this.

nobody said always in every situation.

however, one thing that is true is what people think is faster is
almost always slower when timed by the clock.

And you can also set the Dock to either SIDE of the screen as well, (you know).

:-)

A lot of so-called "improvements" and "innovations" are actually worse
than the original. Some are even completely pointless. Many add more
complexity and make things less reliable and/or more expensive to fix.

Most "improvements" and "innovations" are simply a con by greedy
manufacturers to get stupid people to buy a new product they don't
really need.

A lot of "popular" products are also the worst of the available
choices. They often become "popular" simply because they're cheaper.

Verily, Apple made a bundle from Mavericks, and will make even more
from Yosemite.

You mean like how Mac OS X is cheaper than Microsoft Windows?
