It's about one click more than it used to be, and cleaner since you don't have to reposition and/or resize a second window. But if you want to add an ALBUM to a playlist, go to Music/Albums, right click on the album of interest and select Add to Playlist and then the Playlist you want to add it to. Or as Lewis suggested, start dragging the album. That will make the list of playlists show up on in a column on the right. Drop the album into your preferred playlist. Martin

You can't do it as a separate window, but you can do it. <fires up iTunes> OK, at the top of the window under the play bar and search field, the last item in the tab bar is "Playlists". Click that and you will get a list of your playlists. Pick the playlist you want to modify from the list on the left (it must be a regular playlist, of course, not a smart list). Now, right under the "iTunes Store" button there is "Add to...". Click it. Now you will have all your music on the left and the selected playlist on the right and you can drag all you want. However, this is not what I do (which is why I had to launch iTunes). I simply select songs that I want to add to a playlist and drag them to the right. As soon as I start to move, the list of devices and playlists appears on the right side and I drop the songs onto the desired playlist. So not only is the feature still there, but there are now two ways to access it. -- Gods don't like people not doing much work. People who aren't busy all the time might start to think.

Another question just occurred to me. I know from other people's question that iTunes can deal with two different iPads. I'm presuming I can tell a new one what playlists and iPhoto albums to load. I should also be able to tell it to load all the turned-on apps and books? But what will happen to my neat arrangements of books in iBooks and the folders I have apps and bookmarks arranged on the desktop? Oh, and re: signing up for cellular: do I need a SIM for that if I buy an unlocked Air to begin with? -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist with iPad

I'd prefer an actual apple store, but they're much harder to reach. There is a store that specializes in Apple stuff I've been dealing with for years 50 miles from here, which has very good people and service. i can run a couple other errands when I go. I don't want to make the 100-mile trip until later in the week when it gets up nearer zero, however 8-) -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist with iPad

Note that any Wi-Fi + Cellular adds $130 to the cost over Wi-Fi only so if you don't think you need it or will use it you can save some money there. I don't believe the T-Mobile option was available when I bought mine or I would have jumped on it. They offer 200 MB a month for free which isn't much but I was mostly figuring on VOIP (about half a meg a minute, as I understand it) and light e-mail. The Verizon $20 a month for 1 GB is more than I need. If you get cellular I'd avoid streaming video or audio. I'm pretty sure it'll eat up you data cap. Also, in terms of user support, Apple will give you a year of free telephone support and if you want two years you can shell out an extra $99 plus tax for AppleCare+. I know you want in person support but I thought I'd mention the Apple deal anyway. Anyone know whether I can switch the SIM to a T-Mobile one?

Thanks for the info, though. how do you figure that? t-mobile's 200m free is a no brainer. if you are in a refarmed area (and you probably are), then it will be just fine.

Plus if I have to cut a SIM (to fit I guess) that might be a bit tricky as well. I was looking into the iPhone 5S with T-Mobile and it looks like they sell the SIM chip kit for $10. I can see myself screwing up and having to run through more than one to get it right. Also, if the speed does drop I'm not sure if VOIP will work. I'd asked in the alt.internet.wireless group about that and the only answer I got was that 3G versus 4G might not be the problem. The response is below: VOIP need a steady non-jittery stream. There is one website to test jitter, but it requires a level of flash that I can't run it on my phone. People with cable modems soon discover that VOIP is better on DSL. It is not a matte of bandwidth but rather a matter of jitter. http://myspeed.visualware.com/indexvoip.php I wouldn't put it past the phone companies to make their data jittery enough to screw up voice. endquote A lot of the stuff in alt.internet.wireless is over my head and didn’t quite understand how to figure out if I’d be alright using VOIP at 3g. Another reason I figured I might not mess with the iPad is that if I get the iPhone with the T-Mobile $30 a month plan with the 5GB at 4G lte followed by a drop to 3G that might be enough and I’d drop the $20 a month Verizon 1GB. I’m in NYC and a friend of mine with T-Mobile says she hasn’t had too much of a problem with it in terms of coverage.

Didn't quite follow all of this. One thing I noticed - Verizon is CDMA and T-Mobile is GSM. This doesn't matter? You seem to be saying it doesn't but I thought I'd check. Also, this is a 4th gen iPad ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/FE406LL/A/refurbished-ipad-with-retina-display-wi-fi-cellular-for-verizon-128gb-black-4th-generation -wished I'd waited a little longer - would have saved some money buying a refurb) in case that matters. And I'd be getting 4Glte?

Also, this is a 4th gen iPad verizon is now lte, and uses cdma where lte is not available (which is almost nowhere). t-mobile is mostly gsm/hspa and is in the process of deploying lte. both use sims. the 4th gen ipad supports lte, however, it does not support all of the lte bands used in the usa (the ipad air does). what that means is although you can use the ipad with whatever carrier you want (it's unlocked), you won't get lte if you use it with a different carrier than the one it came with. the ipad you linked was a verizon version, so you'd only get lte with verizon. if you use it with other carriers, you will get 3g/4g. if you get an ipad air, which does have all usa lte bands, then you will get lte no matter what carrier you use. while lte is certainly nice, 3g/4g is usually more than adequate. you will probably not notice a difference, unless you run benchmark apps or make very heavy use of the cellular network.
