An interesting comment. I am thinking of getting back into programming
professionally, having spent many years programming at home but doing
other IT stuff for an income.

As well as being unsure what level of programming skill and experience a
prospective employer would look for (aka compare me with other
programmers available) a lot of the jobs I have seen are ones that I,
like Brendan, really don't think I want to do. I have become more
free-wheeling in my programming and been able to pick things that I want
to do. That's why your comment was interesting. It sounds as though the
job turned out for you to be more interesting than you expected.
