Even if we take something very traditional like C and C++,
then if we leave the application programmer view and go
to the compiler internals view, then GCC (which is
probably one of the most used compilers) really
consists of:

gcc/g++ compiler drivers
cpp preprocessor
cc1/cc1plus compiler
as assembler
collect2 linker [forgive me for the non-nix term]

and guess what - the cc1/cc1plus compiler actually
does not produce neither executable nor object code
but instead assembly code.
