That is correct.  The Java compiler generates intermediate code which is
then converted to machine language (interpreted) by the jvm.

Yes, but "compiler" is really an incorrect term.  I think "translator"
is more accurate, since the "compiler" doesn't produce machine code.

Not really.  The .apk file is still not machine-readable; Android
contains the equivalent of a jvm to process the .apk file.
