As I said - there are third-party tools which will convert Java into
machine code.  But the Java compiler creates bytecode.

It definitely matters!  If you want the resulting file to be independent
of the hardware platform and OS, you must compile to byte code.
Compiling to machine code limits you to one OS series (or sub-series) on
one hardware platform.
