Errr, Java can be compiled into machine code: such compilers exist. GCJ 
could generate either bytecode or machine code for a quite large range of 
architectures. I'm only saying 'could' because the website has no news 
items later than 2009.

True, but that doesn't really matter since can decide whether you want 
bytecode or binary for a supported target system and choose/configure the 
compiler to suit.
