I guess I haven't created new subclasses lately.  So yeah, no problem with putting necessary initialization in the constructor as long as subclasses are required to call that constructor, just put it in one constructor and make any other constructors call that one.

The advantage I see to making all constructors private is if you think the constructor parameters might change, you can build that into the factory?  Otherwise the factory is only required if you're dynamically generating classes with an interface.
