I looked at the manual a while back and it seemed to me that the ISR
would have to twiddle some registers to get the cpu out of super low
power mode.

There's some instructions to set up the timer controller to do that.

Right, that's the idea.  Most of the time the light is switched off and
there's nothing to do, so the cpu sleeps.  It has to be awake when the
light is on, to PWM the light and maybe control a dc-dc converter.
Obviously I haven't figured this all out yet, but I think I have a
general picture.
