It all depends on what you are doing.  Most can turn themselves off and 
run the timer at sub-uA levels.  If you are blasting instructions 
through the CPU it is going to draw current.  There's no way around 
that.  Most ARM lines can achieve current ratings of 100 uA/MHz 
ballpark.  That's pretty durn good really.  So 6 mA @ 48 MHz (120 
uA/MHz) is right in there with the best of them.  I recall a decade ago 
currents were more like 1 mA/MHz.
