I don't know how much trouble it is for you to dl .iso/s, but I think my 
first choice would be to try to boot a live Ub 18.10.  It is possible 
you might ned to use the nomodeset boot parameter and get no gfx 
acceleration and then upgrade that kernel to the newer one.  Personally 
I would do all that with a live USB with persistence, not a hdd install.

If there are going to be bumps in the road, I would rather the bumps be 
on a USB live system than an install.  And I would rather not be making 
a very big jump in kernel v. The kernel up from the 18.10 would be 
smaller; and the 18.10 might work outofthebox.
