nomodeset works, but I think the vga= boot parameter doesn't 'take' any
more. It has been deprecated in favor of other similar approaches to
what that parameter does.

We'll find out more about the graphics below.

Before starting I reminded some years ago I tried to install lubuntu 14 (or 16, I don't remember anymore) on my old notebook and I got graphic problems then I searched a solution and I found out those parameters "vga=791 nomodeset" written above and that installation was completed with success. Due to that experience I've risked this time else I'd have tried the 18.10 as Mike Easter suggested.

In the past with some video problem/solutions the vga= parameter was
useful to help the algorithm solve some issues by providing resolution
help. The important thing is that you weren't faced with a black screen
and likely the nomodeset paremeter helped with that.

Some 'buntu/s come with the helpful inxi script 'pre-installed' and some
do not. If it is already installed, then the command inxi will work.
If it is not pre-installed then the command will tell you that you can
simply install inxi from the repos with sudo apt install inxi (or apt-get).

Simply running inxi without options only tells you some brief hardware
info and running inxi -h will tell you the vast wealth of options and
reports the script can give. We are interested in the -G option:

inxi -G

That will tell you more about the graphics you are running. Here's mine:

$ inxi -G
Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Richland [Radeon HD 8470D] driver: radeon v: kernel
   Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: ati,radeon
   unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1280x1024~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD ARUBA (DRM 2.50.0 / 4.15.0-20-generic LLVM 6.0.0)
   v: 4.3 Mesa 18.0.5

It is likely that you might need to up your kernel to get full benefit
of your Ryzen.
