IMO the best way to research various linux distros for how well they 
work with your hardware and how you like them is by dl/ing the distro, 
writing it to USB, and boot it up live and seeing how yuou like what you 
get.

Hold off on installing anything until you get a feel for various options.

I like Mint Cinnamon.  I also like Ubuntu Mate.  You have a lot of 
choices.  It is quicker and better to fetch the .iso and write it to USB 
and boot it than it is to search for answers to hardware related questions.

Since you will be starting with Win, you need a torrent agent to make it 
faster for dl/ing iso/s, a USB writer for writing 'some' USB sticks.

I like qBit torrent in Windows, Rufus for writing USB, HashCalc to check 
the hash after dl.  If you are trying to write multiple .iso/s to USB, 
then I use Yumi, but that multiple business is not as reliable to work.

Later, when you would rather spend more time in linux than Win, I use 
Transmission for the torrents, mkusb to write .iso/s with persistence, 
and there is a hashchecker built into many file managers.

And the sooner you are able to 'work in' linux such as being able to use 
a linux client to read and post to ng/s, you learn faster.  Googlegroups 
is a terrible way to read and post to ng/s.
