The whole system needs to be properly designed to get interrupts (and multiprocessing of interrupts) correct. How many generations of PICs and APICs has Intel done? This goes for the perpherials as well. The old 6845 certaintly did not have interrupts and multiprocessing in mind when it was designed. And I've seen some interrupt architectures where I don't think the designers had any idea what a typical general purpose OS required. - Tim
