That does define the old and new internet.

IN the "old days" someone would issue an RFC, in effect giving away 
details to something, to be used or rejected as the users see fit.  It was 
about defining protocol.  You see that, there are local newsgroups that 
aren't technically Usenet, but which do use the same protocol

Then at some point, it became very commercial, everyone wanting to create 
a space that was better than the others, and which could be used to make 
money somehow, by being unique.  I was getting email asking me to "like 
them" on facebook almost before I had much of an idea of what facebook 
was, and certainly didn't initially grasp why some commercial company 
would want me to be their "friend".  Then I understood it, and I won't 
link to facebook, I won't join facebook, and so I won't do contests if 
they require facebook.  It's self-perpetuating, that's one reason facebook 
has done so well.

I admit to reading facebook pages, but sadly only because they've become 
the default, and if I want to know when that book store is having a big 
blowout used book sale, their facebook page is the only place to find it. 
Oddly enough, my webpage about local used book sales comes up first in 
most searches related to the topic (unless google is skewering things 
specifically for me, so the results I see aren't what others see), and 
while I have no idea how many might make use of it, I know it gets the 
information about used book sales out to a higher level.  I've probably 
brought some other pages up further too, simply by linking to an otherwise 
obscure page.
