Are shell accounts the original > 'walled gardens'? ;) > BBSs were. I got a Radio Shack Model 100 in late 1985, which came with a modem so I could go online. Now part of the problem was that it had 8 lines of 40 characters, but every so often I'd see a BBS number, call it, have to register before I could see anything, and then never call back after registering. That seemed very closed, but even looking inside, you'd discover a small population, the ones who happened to call that BBS. You ended up networking with people who called that BBS, rather than networking shared interests or whatever. Then some time later, I'd give it a try, get the same results. I now realize that some of it was that the BBSs that were promoting themselves were the ones that were just starting up (so even if I'd stuck around, the BBS might not last long), so it was even a smaller population than I imagined. Finally I found some that were networked, via Fido but also there was some local networking so the local newsgroup got to some of the local BBSs, and that was different. Suddenly you didn't need to call multiple places if you wanted to reach a wider audience. Suddenly there was potential for "local", though that was on the cusp of the Internet taking over. It was late 1994, two years later I had full internet access. Any place that ran a shell account likely was networked. After all Usenet was to network computers without arpanet, and it was easy with unix computers (where the shells likely were anyway). That's the neat thing, I could run a newsserver here (if I spent the time to configure it), the software came with Linux and pass messages, so long as it's a limited set of newsgroups. BBSs of the Fidonet kind, or the standalone kind, they tended to use MSDOS, and then BBS software running on top of it, not an out of the box set up. Michael
