When I got full internet for the first time, in August of 1996, it was via the Montreal Freenet, we'd waited three years for it, and it lasted four months. But once dialed in, we landed in lynx, the text only browser, and from there could invoke Pine for newsgroups and email. Lynx is also a sort of file browser, so it made a good "shell" when they didn't want users access to everything. When that died, I moved to one of the few local ISPs that did have shell access, and kept that until 2005, and then I moved to the second oldest local ISP, which also offers shell access. I even kept that, minus the dialup, after I got DSL in October of 2012. I wanted to keep my email address and webpage, but technically anytime I have access somewhere I can telnet to that ISP. Not that I have yet. Michael
