You don't need a browser with a newsreader.  I can't even look at messages 
via google from a console anymore, it now appears to need javascript. 
It's incredibly bloated considering how simple Usenet is.

I've accidentally erased things, but generally I have very message I sent 
since August of 1996.  The newsreader does that automatically, I don't 
have to remember to save anything.  So I can go back and look (assuming I 
can find the old file with a given set of messages).

I don't know about google, but on message boards and comments to posts, 
I've set out to reply, only to lose my work before I get to press send. 
At lwast with my newsreader, I have more of a chance to recover if 
something bad happens.

That's another thing, I can start a reply, and then postpone it, to finish 
later.  That can't be done easily with a web interface (I'd have to cut 
and paste and save, and then remember where I saved that file, and then 
find the message again that I wanted to reply to).  For that matter, I can 
save messages that have some value to me, it's in a nice easy form, while 
doing so via a web interface means either another bookmark, or cutting and 
pasting.

I didnt' even run a graphic browser at home until mid-2001.  Yes, that's 
now fifteen years in the past, but at the time it was five years after I 
got full internet.  Newsreaders are for Usenet, browsers are for the web.

ANd since I dont' think anyone has mentioned it, google allows replies to 
old messages, which means many an idiot can reply to a really old message, 
leaving the rest of us wondering about context (except it happens enough 
that most times it's obviously a reply to an old message).  They often 
don't use a proper subject header, they may not quote, they give no 
context, but they act like they are replying to a mesage from last week. 
It may look fine at google, but for the rest of us, the old message 
expired soon after it was sent, so unless we go to google to figure it 
out, we don't have the original message.  To make things worse, others 
aren't so observant, so they chime in to the resurrected thread (because 
they are viewing it at google), often adding nothing because enough was 
said the first time.  I've even seen people reply to a resurrected thread 
with the same sort of reply they gave the first time.

Dejanews was useful, an archive.  It was good that google kept that 
archive online, but google has done a lousy job since.  Using google 
isn't really using usenet.
