Well how did you find useful newsgroups in "the old days?"

I probably grazed through the list of available newsgroups at one point, 
but mostly I'd guess at a name, and do a search of that list.  Since 
dejanews arrived shortly before I had full internet access in August of 
1996, I started doing searches on things via dejanews, and that would 
uncover newsgroups that were discussing things that interested me.  That 
still works, via google, though maybe their search engine of usenet has 
been messed up too much.

Then you check the newsgroup, and see if it's active.

Since it is all supposed to be in the right place, that's the way to do 
it, rather than looking for active newsgroups, since active newsgroups may 
not have the discussion you want.

ANd the reality is people check newsgroups without posting.  So someone 
could post on topic, and get replies.
