I think that's an important point.  Usenet (and emailing lists) have set 
the standard, so anything that came later was influenced by it, hoping to 
"be better", and probably doing so for too many people.  But nobody wants 
to claim "we took Usenet and put it on the web" or whatever.  Twitter 
seemed to be something from cellphones, text messaging and probably does 
well because it straddles both.  From landing at reddit via searches, that 
seems to be very much Usenet-like, except it's web-based.

It's amusing to see later comers on web-based things talk about 
"crossposting" and "spam" and the like, things obviously created much 
earlier in a much less commercial forum.
