It is my understanding that QNX has two types of interrupt handler, a user-supplied handler that I believe runs in supervisor mode and a default handler that masks the interrupt and increments the mask's reference cnt. Both can notify a task using a sigevent structure to raise a signal or send a pulse which is a small non-blocking message. Once all interrupt handlers are finished an EOI is sent to the interrupt controller. Some of these handlers will have masked an interrupt using InterruptMask. It is then the responsibility of the awakened task to determine if the hardware it manages is the source of the interrupt and if so, clear it before unmasking the interrupt. Only when the reference count of a interrupt's mask is zero does it become unmasked. I can't remember how Minix did things other than receive interrupts as messages using the Receive() system call. I believe Receive() could be selective of where it received message from with options like ANY or HARDWARE. I don't know how Minix handles shared interrupts, perhaps it masks interrupts in a similar way to QNX. A bit off topic: Coroutines might be useful for threading device drivers that run as a single thread but support multiple units. A few months ago I was working out how to multithread a file system using coroutines and thought something similar could be done with drivers. A master coroutine waits for incoming request messages and interrupts, each unit that a driver handles gets its own coroutine stack onto which requests are handled for that unit. If a message request comes in from a client the master coroutine farms it out onto the unit's coroutine. Whenever a coroutine wants to wait for an interrupt it yields to the master coroutine (effectively a Sleep). Perhaps a coroutine is waiting for a DMA operation to complete, control would return to the master coroutine enabling it to handle further requests instead of just waiting for the interrupt. The master coroutine waits for more messages or interrupts, farms requests for other units onto other coroutines. If the master coroutine receives an interrupt-message it can then yield back to the coroutine that was waiting for an interrupt (effectively a Wakeup). From what I read QNX used coroutines to multithread its file system server FSys before they implemented pthreads. I'm not sure if they used coroutines in the device drivers though. -- Marv
