There are at least a thousand better choices for occasional word
processing than Open Office.

On the Mac, TextEdit in RTF mode is good enough for occasional word
processing. If not, then you will have Pages if you've bought any recent
mac or iOS device and it's quite good. I wouldn't write a book in Pages,
but then again I wouldn't write a book in Word either.

If you don't like either of those, Bean is pretty good and free (and
even has some level of MS Word compatibility). I don't use Bean because
it doesn't allow floating images, and what I use a WP for almost
exclusively is creating an invoice that uses a floating image.
