My text-/word processors are in prefered order...
1, NisusWriter Pro 1,5/2.x (commercial program)
For everything requiring more than just plain text. It handles RTF/RTFD,
Doc/DOCX, tables, inline graphics in RTF/&RTFD (Mac only users), but
changing suffix from RTF/RTFD to DOC/DOCX will retain graphics even for
Windows users. - And not to forget - NWP handles *any* kind of language
from Latin text over any Semittic to any Asian languages in one and the
same document - i.e. both 1-byte and 2-byte languages (former also known
as WorldScript 1 and 2). NWP also fully supports ODF file format.
2, Apache OpenOffice 4.x (freeware)
Same reasons and features as above + lot more like presentations,
complex spreadsheets etc.. 2-Byte languages like the Asian though are
somewhat more complex to work with than in NWP, but it is possible when
you once have learned it.
Right now I'm thinking of upgrading Apache OpenOffice to StarOffice for
Mac in order to get the increased speed towards OpenOffice...
3, Bean 2.45 + 3.2.x (freeware)
I use this mostly as a replacement for TextEdit, but also now and then
for text documents only in both RTF and DOC/DOCX formats. One could also
call Bean a "standard word processor for the daily use"...
3a, Lightway iText Pro 3.4 (shareware)
This one I use for minor HTML and other plain text editing.
3b, BBEdit 9.6.x (commercial)
I use BBEdit when I really have to work with complex text editing and
HTML work. - Also BBEdit is capable of opening nearly any file so it's
possible to extract common text and other needed data.
4, MarinerWrite 3.9.x (commercial)
Primarely to open and convert older documents to be able to retain
formatting. MW is very good at that point.
5, MSOffice 2008 (commercial)
If it can't be otherwise....
6. Pages / iWork 09 (commercial)
Well, I don't like Pages, but I'm forced to use it in some translation
work since the original ('Master') is being delievered in Pages 09
though I've asked the company to either get NWP or use Apache OpenOffice.
Hereto I have quite a few more both word processors and text editors
that I seldon use for normal work. these I mostly use for experimental
use...
